Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy substance made in the liver and found in certain foods, such as dairy products (whole milk), eggs and meat. The body needs some cholesterol to function properly. Too much cholesterol can build up in the walls of arteries. Over time, this build-up can restrict blood flow to the body's tissue, including the heart, brain and lower limbs, thereby increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, or vascular diseases. Cholesterol levels can be measured through blood tests. Treatments may include changes in diet (low-fat, low-cholesterol), lifestyle habits, medication, or a combination of these.
