Improving maternal and child health in India
PRASAD Chikitsa is one of a network of six national humanitarian programs of
PRASAD Worldwide. Since 1960, the nonprofit organization has provided
integrated rural development assistance to mostly tribal populations residing
in the Tansa region of Maharashtra, India. With Abbott Fund's support, PRASAD
Chikitsa will improve access to appropriate care for women and children through
the provision of Abbott product donations, expand the number of trained and
appropriately equipped birth attendants by training 50 midwives through a
two-year course, build clinic infrastructure to upgrade and significantly
expand the facility services and patient capacity, integrate an increase in
staff, better diagnostic capabilities, more advanced laboratory tests, and
health education, and track and report on key established health metrics that
demonstrate progress towards objectives
Improving Pediatric Nutrition in China
In partnership with Project HOPE, this program will address pediatric
nutrition by creating a Nutritional Center for Excellence in China at the
Shanghai Children’s Medical Center (SCMC) in its first stage (year 1), and
piloting school-based nutrition education and community nutrition approaches in
selected communities, and linking the communities to services at the
Nutritional Center for Excellence (years 2-3). The Nutritional Center for
Excellence will seek to provide nutritional research and support at the
clinical level in the cardiovascular surgery intensive care unit, oncology
unit, pediatric critical care unit, and neonatal care unit. The Nutrition
Center will also supervise the testing of school-based education program and
community-based nutrition approaches among children and adolescents in selected
communities. A three-year effort is envisioned to establish a Center that will
be capable of addressing these complex issues.
Encouraging Healthy Orphanages in China
Since 2004, Abbott and Abbott China have donated high quality infant formula
to orphaned children at Jiaozuo Welfare Home in Henan Province of China. To
date, over 250 children have benefited from the formula program and the
mortality rate has dropped since our donations began. Abbott also supports the
New Hope Foundation, an organization that provides palliative and support to
other children suffering from a variety of serious illnesses. Regular donations
of PediaSure are distributed to their three Special Care Units located within
state run orphanages in Henan Province.
