Expanding Access and Affordability to Treatment
Almost 40 million people are living with HIV worldwide. Abbott has
filed or been approved to help serve developing, as well as developed,
countries where 90 percent of the world's HIV population lives.

In 2002, Abbott made a commitment to HIV patients in Africa and least
developed countries (LDCs) that we would sell our HIV medicines at
affordable prices.

Access to testing and counseling is the first line of defense in
stemming the HIV crisis. Abbott provides a rapid HIV test at no profit to
programs in 69 developing countries.

Except in South Africa, Abbott has no patents on its HIV medicines in
Africa. Abbott's HIV medicines are available in South Africa at no profit
to Abbott through the Abbott Access program.

Supporting Children
HIV/AIDS has a devastating effect upon children. Abbott Fund is working
to both advance the treatment of children with HIV and improve the lives
of orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS in developing
countries.

A mother infected with HIV has a 30 percent risk of passing the infection on
to her baby, and mother-to-child transmission of HIV causes the majority of
childhood HIV cases in the developing world – affecting perhaps as many as
1,800 children each day. Abbott donates rapid HIV tests to prevent
mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

Strengthening Health Care Systems
The World Health Organization cites a lack of health infrastructure as a key
barrier to expanding access to HIV treatment in the developing world. Our work
in Tanzania can serve as a model for other developing nations.
