Abbott and Partners Provide Assistance in Response to Earthquakes and Typhoon

Typhoon Ketsana ravaged areas of Vietnam, after which a second storm battered the Philippines and a major earthquake shook Indonesia. The wide-scale destruction left hundreds of thousands of people in need of food, shelter and medical care.

Typhoon Ketsana roared through the Philippines on Sept. 26, causing severe flooding that pushed more than two million people out of their homes. Subsequently, Typhoon Parma bypassed Manila, the capital city, which was devastated by Ketsana. However, it caused flooding throughout other areas of the country. Abbott's headquarters and Abbott Philippines coordinated both cash and product donations valued at over $270,000 to AmeriCares, Catholic Medical Mission Board, Direct Relief International, MAP International and the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC).

On September 30th, an earthquake registering 7.6 on the Richter scale stunned Indonesia, causing landslides and additional shockwaves leaving thousands of people trapped beneath crumbled buildings, homes and bridges. Abbott Indonesia and Abbott's U.S. headquarters assessed needs and coordinated donations of Pedialyte, for local partner organizations. The combined value of pharmaceutical and nutritional products provided by Abbott, totals over USD $730,000.

Typhoon Ketsana later travelled across Vietnam, severely damaging 250,000 homes and forcing the evacuation of 600,000 people. Abbott and Abbott Vietnam immediately delivered cash and nutritional products valued at more than USD $35,000 to the Vietnam Red Cross. Abbott Vietnam played a critical role in pulling products from its local warehouses and delivering them to the Vietnam Red Cross.
