Among our people. Across our culture. Around our business.

Diversity is fundamental at Abbott, with unique perspectives inspiring us to innovate ways to address the world’s biggest health challenges.

That’s why we’re proud DiversityInc has recognized Abbott's efforts among its Top 50 Companies for Diversity for the last 19 years – and especially so this year, when we’ve ranked No. 3 on the list. The organization determines the list by looking at a company’s leadership accountability, diversity metrics, talent programs, workplace practices, supplier diversity and philanthropy.

“Diversity has long been at the heart of our business at Abbott, and we’re working to ingrain it not only into our own organization and culture, but also throughout healthcare,” said Robert Ford, Chairman and CEO. “We’re taking action to increase health equity at every stage of the ecosystem, from our ability to innovate to clinical trials, from manufacturing and supply chain to access to care. There are 113,000 of us at Abbott around the world and we know the kind of difference we can make in people’s lives.”

DiversityInc also publishes specialty lists to evaluate and recognize companies for strong performance in particular areas. Abbott ranked as No. 1 on the Top Companies for Supplier Diversity list and saw top 10 rankings for our philanthropy and environment, social and governance (ESG) efforts.

In our operations and our work with others we’re bringing diversity, equity and inclusion to life. Here are a few examples:

  • Supporting Diverse Small Businesses: Our joint initiative with Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) aims to provide diverse small businesses with growth capital, loans and coaching to help them expand and create jobs, which will help create a stronger, more diverse healthcare supply chain.
  • Diversity in Clinical Trials: This initiative is designed to help create a more inclusive clinical trial ecosystem and reflects Abbott’s commitment to populations who have historically been under-represented in medical research. One example of this effort’s impact: $5 million in scholarships for the next generation of ethnically diverse nurses, doctors and researchers.
  • STEM Internships: For more than a decade, Abbott has hosted high school interns in the United States, offering them experience in science, technology, engineering and math. The program is designed to reach diverse students and girls. It’s working. So far, more than 70% of the former high school interns we’ve hired as full-time engineers are female.
